GRASS GIS 6.4.2 released
19 February 2012

We are pleased to announce the release of a new stable version of
GRASS GIS. This release fixes bugs discovered in version 6.4.1 of the
program and adds a number of new features. This release includes over
760 updates to the source code since 6.4.1. As a stable release series,
the 6.4 line will enjoy long-term support and incremental enhancements
while preserving backwards-compatibility with the entire GRASS 6 line.

The new wxPython graphical user interface (wxGUI) has been updated
with many new features and tools. Python is now a fully supported
scripting language, including an updated Python toolkit to simplify
the authoring of personal scripts, support for NumPy based array
calculations, and a Python application interface for the GRASS C
libraries. Additionally, MS-Windows support continues to mature.
GRASS 6.4.2 debuts ten new modules, a new GUI cartographic composer
tool, a new GUI object-oriented modeling environment, and improved
infrastructure for installing community supplied add-on modules.

The Geographic Resources Analysis Support System, commonly referred to
as GRASS, is an Open Source Geographic Information System (GIS) and
geospatial analysis toolkit. For nearly three decades, GRASS has
provided powerful raster, vector, and geospatial processing engines in
a single integrated software suite. GRASS includes tools for spatial
modeling of raster and vector data, visualization, the management and
analysis of geospatial information, and the processing of satellite
and aerial imagery. It also provides the capability to produce
sophisticated presentation graphics and publication-quality hardcopy
maps. GRASS has now been translated into twenty languages and supports
an extensive array of data formats. It is distributed under the terms
of the GNU General Public License (GPL).

GRASS differs from many other GIS software packages used in the
academic and professional worlds in that it is developed and
distributed by users for users, mostly on a volunteer basis. Its code
and spatial processing algorithms are open and transparent, and the
software is distributed free of charge. The source code is also freely
available, allowing for immediate customization, examination of the
underlying algorithms, the addition of new features, and faster
identification and patching of bugs.

Google에서는 매년 Google Summer of Code(GSoC) 행사를 개최합니다.

Hello all!

GSoC 2012 has been announced [1,2] and OSGeo is going to apply as
mentoring organisation, like it did successfully in past years.

What's up now? OSGeo projects that plan to take part in GSoC are
invited to put together an Ideas page on their wiki and add a link to
it on our central Ideas page [3,4], make a "call for mentors" on their
communication channels, and welcome would-be students as contributors.

Would-be students can browse the Ideas pages of previous years and
contact former students and mentors. We also suggest them to that they
introduce themselves and start contributing to the project they have
chosen, in order to get in touch with the project's community and get
familiar with the codebase.

All: take a look at the calendar [5] and spread the word about OSGeo
GSoC in real and virtual places around the world!

all the best,
OSGeo GSoC administrator

      • Venue: KINTEX, Goyang City
      • Organizer: OSGeo Korean Language Chapter
      • Keynote Speakers : Arnulf Christl, Toru Mori, Daisuke Yoshida, Byungnam Choi, Sanghee Shin
      • The event was highly successful with around 60 ~ 80 participants. 5 keynote speech and 8 presentations were given there followed by Soju Party!!
  • Regular Meetings
    • 2 times regular meetings

  • Others
    • Official OSGeo Koran Language Chapter homepage was created to share our activities.

Areas for Improvement

  • Too much dependency on too small key members. We need to increase active members.
  • Korean chapter is still not legal entity, therefore there are several limitations to do our activities. We need to change our status to legal entity in near future.
  • Need to expand activities to international scale. Our chapter has very talented members however their activities are somewhat isolated here in Korea.
  • We need to seek stable revenue source to run our chapter. Our chapter financial is highly dependent on limited donation sources.

Opportunities to Help

  • We definitely need some speakers for FOSS4G Korea 2012.
  • We hope more open source GIS related event could be held here in Korea or in Asia region.

Outlook for 2012

  • We may see very prosperous year in 2012. As awareness of open source GIS increase here in Korea rapidly, many organizations want to cooperate with our chapter.
  • In 2012, we may attract more members to our chapter and could run our chapter in more systematic way.
  • We'll explore the possibility of hosing FOSS4G 2015 in Korea with other GIS related society like KSIS(Korean Spatial Information Society).

- GeoServer: WPS
- GeoWebCache: GWC
